List of best selling consoles of all time

Playstation 2 (157 million)

The PS2 is the best-selling home console in the world. Far ahead of the Wii. Released in 2000, the PlayStation 2 replaced the PS and its success was immediate.

The number of games available on the console was overwhelming. This console paved the way for subsequent generations by creating a true console fan base.

Nintendo DS (154 million)

The Nintendo DS marked the big return of portable consoles at Nintendo. The machine had a double cartridge. Allows placing a DS game as well as a Game Boy Advance game.

Backward compatibility already existed back then. And so much the better! Because it has sold 154 million copies worldwide since 2004.

Game Boy (118 million)

Mythical console of the 80s, it also knew evolutions and mythical games. Zelda, Pokémon, Tetris are all games that have marked the history of the console.

In France, 1.4 million copies were sold in the first year. Nintendo has sold 118 million worldwide

Playstation (104 million)

Sony’s first console, the PS, remains the best-selling of them all…104 million copies sold since 1994.

And a gigantic catalog of games. It’s not for nothing that Sony decided to release a retro console in 2018, the PS Classic with 20 pre-installed games.

Nintendo Wii (101 million)

Released in 2006, Nintendo sold 101 million Wiis worldwide. This console is the first to allow you to play with your body thanks to a position detector, but also with the movements of the controller.

The Wii reached a much wider audience than before. And that’s what has allowed Nintendo to get out of its post-PSP and PS2 bad stance.

Today Mario Kart, New Super Mario and Rabbids have become legendary games.

PlayStation 4 (92 million)

Released in 2013, the PlayStation 4 is Sony’s latest console as far as home consoles go. To date, more than 92 million copies have been sold. And we will remember its chaotic launch due to the lack of consoles given the demand.

The waiting list stretched over several months! Since 2016, the PS4 has had a Slim version that is less bulky, as well as a more powerful Pro version! There are console exclusives like Call of Duty, FIFA and GTA. To date, it remains the best-selling next-gen console in the world.

PlayStation 3 (86 million)

Despite being released later than the Xbox 360, it still outsold. The battle raged between these two consoles, with exclusive offers, promos etc. What made it successful compared to Microsoft’s box is the fact that it is the 3rd generation in a line of consoles.

Also, players could play online for free, which inevitably boosts sales. And most importantly, you could play PS1 games on it as well as connect the PSP. We are currently at 86 million units sold by Sony since 2006.
